Education: Alternative to Gang Membership

In the Philippines, Preda Foundation, a local human rights charity, said that teenage membership in urban gang has surged to an estimated 130,000 in the past 10 years.

Gang members are groomed in the slums as early as 9 years old. And according to soma researches made gang members at such early age are all victims of poverty.

Efren Peñaflorida, 28, also was bullied by gangs in high school. He is one of those who became a gang member when he was young. Now, Peñaflorida’s life has changed.

 
Philippines Makes History through International Science Education Scene

As it joins the review body that would set the science education policy of an international organization for the next seven year, Philippines makes history once again.

Philippines is the only ASEAN country joins the panel in reviewing the science education policy of the International Council for Science (ICSU), an international non-governmental organization devoted to international co-operation in the advancement of science.

 
Rescue Boat Inventor

Filipino inventors of rescue boat barely showed interest in acquiring their work for several reasons.

Mariano Griño, now 62 and one of rescue boat inventors, said that he cannot produce without orders due to lack of enough capital.

Griño is the retired as division chief at the National Economic and Development Authority in Western Visayas. He is a reservist of the Regional Community Defense Center.

Because of his experience he has in producing rubber boats, he built a prototype boat in the backyard of his house in Jaro District in Iloilo City, utilizing imported and locally made materials.

 
2009 National Invention Contest and Exhibits

Through the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI), Department of Science and Technology (DOST) conducted its 2009 National Invention Contest and Exhibits (2009 NICE) at the Philippine Trade Training Center in Pasay City last November 16-20, 2009.

The event aims to give recognition to ingenious Filipinos and encourage the value of inventiveness among the young in pursuant to Article II of Republic Act No. 7459, the Philippine Inventors Act.

The 2009 NICE is highlighted by the conferment of awards, including Outstanding Inventions (Tuklas Award), Outstanding Utility Models, Outstanding Industrial Designs, Outstanding Creative Researches (Likha Award), and Outstanding Student Creative Research (Sibol Award) for high school and college students.

 
Pelleting Machine for Goat Food

Dr. Armando Espino of Central Luzon State University (CLSU) has developed a machine that can make goat feeds into pellets.

The said machine is expected to help out ensure the continuous availability of high-protein, low-cost feeds of goats by using the surplus during the wet months as material for pelleted total mixed ration (TMR).

Dr. Espino designed and fabricated the gadget to ensure a year-round feed supply for goats. The pelleted TRM is a mixture of napier, ipil-ipil, rice bran, copra meal, molasses, discaphos, ranzoni, and salt, a complete nutrient food for goats. With it, goats are guaranteed to have better food efficiency and greater starch digestibility.
