As President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signs the Republic Act 10055, known as Philippine Technology Transfer Act of 2009, research output will no longer take time in reaching the public as tangible product. The president signed the law last March 23 which is now defines as Intellectual Property (IP) as the tangible assets resulting from the creative work of an individual or an organization, including creations of the mind, such as inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce. |

According to the new Director-General of Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IP Philippines), Ricardo R. Blancaflor, the growing number of patents on Filipino inventions certifies assurance against patent infringer and removes our country from the watch list of US. This will be the mission of their agency in the next five year. The office had confiscated about P5.6 billion worth of fake goods last year, and they expect to snitch at least the same amount this year. |

In the last 2 economic years, PAL's financial situation has been failing, with over $350 million annual losses. An agreement was signed by PAL to formalize the partnership with ePLDT Ventus on June 1, 2010. ePLDT Ventus is a subsidiary of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT). They will handle call center operations thru flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL). The call center venture of PAL is included in the 3 non-core units of the airline and it will possibly employ an initial of 3,000 workers. The other 2 units will handle in-flight catering services and airport services such as ground round handling, cargo terminal/cargo handling and ramp handling. According to PAL, ePLDT Ventus will provide job opportunities to all affected employees of PAL's reservation sales units located in Manila, Cebu, and at the Mabuhay Miles Center. Those employees will be prioritized in the selection of 600 agent positions. |

Once more, the Filipinos had proven to be world class and globally competitive as the seven high school students will participate in this years Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF). The world's biggest pre-college science research competition will be held in May 9 to 14 in San Jose, California. These seven high school students are: Marc Mapalo, Maria Clara Isabel Sia and Jean Reni de Guzman of the Philippine Science High School-Eastern Visayas, who will be representing the country in the Life Sciences category; and Hanna Escobido and Brayl Ymbol of the Caraga State University High School, who will be taking part in the Physical Sciences competition. |

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) develop a flagship venture with Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) which subsidize about P16, 758,514.73 for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) projects since 2003. The said project is a non-collateralized and interest free program. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo calls for more focused assistance programs for MSMEs. Arnold Inumpa, DOST's Benguet Provincial S&T Center Director, explained that as of February 2009, 46 SET-UP projects are expected for the Benguet region. He wants to pursue MSMEs in Benguet and also in CAR to benefit with the program so that they will be able to develop and grow their businesses. |
