Scientists Discuss Issues at the Core of Climate Change

Last May 5 at Hotel Del Rio, some experts on climate change presented their findings with issues and concerns in a symposium entitled, Enhancing Communities' Capacity to Confront Extreme Geo-Meteorological Events at the Core of Climate Change.

Deputy Administrator for Research and Development of the PAG-ASA, Dr. Nathaniel Servando discussed Climate Change-Related Extreme Weather Conditions, while Dr. Rodolfo Tamayo Jr. of the UP National Institute of Geological Sciences discussed Climate Change Related Extreme Geological Events.

 
Excellent Filipino Innovation in 2008 Distinguished

In the recent Nation Inventions Contest held at Philippine Trade Training Center in Pasay City last Nov. 17-21, Rolando dela Cruz of the Famed DeWart and DeMole Skin Care Prodcuts, developed the new cream that can treat basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the most common type of skin cancer, by non-invasive, direct application.

Though introduced for the first time in the country, the new product, which is called DeBCC, picked up awards in the invention tilts abroad. As part of the prize from the Department of Science and Technology, Dela Cruz received P150,000.

 
TAPI and DOST facilitate in Filipinos' inventions

House Bill 2038 seeks to revive the Philippine Inventors Commission (PIC) to be able to boost the competitiveness of Filipino inventors. PIC was created in 1964 by virtue of Republic Act (RA) 3850. Its aim is to promote research and development to provide technical, financial, legal, and marketing assistance to Filipino inventors. In 1987, it was abolished by Executive Order 128 as part of the government reorganization.

Another Filipino artist abroad follows the heels of success together with Charice Pempengco and Rafe Totengco.

Rony Fortich gives honour to the Philippines same with the two as Hong Kong Disneyland chose his song Celebration in the Air as their background music in their 5th anniversary celebration this year.

 
Philippine schools for young scientists opened

The number of public schools that breed future Filipino scientists has now reached 200 nationwide, with the addition this school year of 100 new schools that offer specialized curriculum focused on the sciences.

 
Lourdes Cruz

Professor Lourdes Cruz is a Filipina marine scientist who was globally known for her contribution in the field of science and technology. She was the sole awardee from Asia-Pacific and one of the 5 women scientists who were given recognition in the prestigious 12th Annual L'Oreal-Unesco awards for women in science at the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) headquarters in Paris, France.

 
The Outstanding Fernandino Awards

During the 10th cityhood anniversary happened at the Heroes Hall in San Fernando, the city government awarded the 17 local Fernandinos for showing the true Fernandino spirit in their respective fields.

 
Filipino Scientists to Expand Tech Harnessing Solar Power

To help the handicraft industry reduces contamination of water, Filipino scientists with the Department of Science and Technology's Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) is now embarking on a project to develop a technique dubbed as wastewater detoxification.

Chief for Environmental Division Dr. Christopher Silverio of ITDI is now leading a team to develop this technique called solar photocatalysis, which uses solar energy as primary catalyst in removing toxic dyes in water.

Silverio's team is using a non-toxic chemical called titanium oxide to help break down pollutants in the water.
