Filipino Agricultural Scientist

Ramon Magsaysay Foundation (RMAF) had recognized Asian people who became true leaders in their own field. One of the awardees is Romulo Davide, also known as the "Father of Plant Nematology", a 78-year-old agricultural scientist. He was given recognition because of his unwavering passion in helping Filipino farmers. He had conducted broad research about fungi which lead to the development of biological products that struggle nematode infestations common in vegetables, rice, and fruits, among others.

The Great ASEAN Scientists

The following are the scientists who received prominent award because they have used science to uplift their community:

Romulo Davide, an agricultural scientist was one of the recipients of 2012 Ramon Magsaysay Awards last August 31. Davide was recognized because his contribution in agricultural research. He had encouraged other farmers to use science in their farming activities.

With this start, Davide made empowerment possible through his Farmer-Scientists Training Programme. He established linkages with scientists who will help the farmers in the integration of science in crop production. With Davide’s projects, new technologies were developed to assist various farming needs.

Personalized Drug Dosage

Who could say that a school’s study will win the Best Project of the Year?

A joint undertaking of DOST and BPI was held recently. It aims to distinguish and give incentives to graduating students in select colleges/universities who excel in specialized fields of science, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science and biology.

LiDAR, an inexpensive laser

Learn LiDAR, a technology that makes use of laser pulses that generate 3D data.

Peter John Rodrigo, a Filipino laser scientist, is the recipient of prominent 2012 DOPS Prize for his work on wind LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) and optical trapping. He is a researcher for the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) Fotonik Optical Sensor Technology group. His wind LiDAR can measure the wind direction and velocity remotely. DTU Fotonik supported the commercialization of Rodrigo’s invention. Since the device is using inexpensive semiconductor lasers, the company recently patented LiDAR.
