Filipino Agricultural Scientist

Ramon Magsaysay Foundation (RMAF) had recognized Asian people who became true leaders in their own field. One of the awardees is Romulo Davide, also known as the "Father of Plant Nematology", a 78-year-old agricultural scientist. He was given recognition because of his unwavering passion in helping Filipino farmers. He had conducted broad research about fungi which lead to the development of biological products that struggle nematode infestations common in vegetables, rice, and fruits, among others.

The Great ASEAN Scientists

The following are the scientists who received prominent award because they have used science to uplift their community:

Romulo Davide, an agricultural scientist was one of the recipients of 2012 Ramon Magsaysay Awards last August 31. Davide was recognized because his contribution in agricultural research. He had encouraged other farmers to use science in their farming activities.

With this start, Davide made empowerment possible through his Farmer-Scientists Training Programme. He established linkages with scientists who will help the farmers in the integration of science in crop production. With Davide’s projects, new technologies were developed to assist various farming needs.

Who could say that a school’s study will win the Best Project of the Year?

A joint undertaking of DOST and BPI was held recently. It aims to distinguish and give incentives to graduating students in select colleges/universities who excel in specialized fields of science, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science and biology.

LiDAR, an inexpensive laser

Learn LiDAR, a technology that makes use of laser pulses that generate 3D data.

Peter John Rodrigo, a Filipino laser scientist, is the recipient of prominent 2012 DOPS Prize for his work on wind LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) and optical trapping. He is a researcher for the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) Fotonik Optical Sensor Technology group. His wind LiDAR can measure the wind direction and velocity remotely. DTU Fotonik supported the commercialization of Rodrigo’s invention. Since the device is using inexpensive semiconductor lasers, the company recently patented LiDAR.

Filipino Discovers Treatment System for Bananas

Philippines is the 3rd largest banana exporting country in the world. About P35 billion was earned by banana industry and almost P400 million local taxes was contributed to the country.

Moko and Panama Diseases, these are fungous and contagious infections that could spread in banana plantations and also eventually damage the plants. Moko is an infectious disease which ripens the fruits too early. It also kills the infected plants in few weeks. Panama disease is a Fusarium oxyforumcubense fungus which destroyed the Malaysian banana 3 years ago.

DOST's immersion freezer: truly Cost Efficient

Another brainchild of the collaboration of Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Industrial Technology Development Institute, the Metals Industry Research and Development Center, and the Project Management Engineering and Design Service Office is the immersion freezer.

Ateneo Student won 3rd place in Best Project of the Year

A yearly research competition is being sponsored by BPI and DOST which recognizes students who outshine in specialized fields of science. BPI and DOST search for students who conducted researches in mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science, biology and environmental science.

Outstanding Filipino Inventors
The Department of Science and Technology had celebrated the National Science and Technology Month last July. Part of their event is the awarding of four innovative scientists from the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) for sharing their expertise in thru research in various fields. Among them are:
In genetics, Christian Joseph Cumagun had received the Outstanding Research and Development Eduardo Quisumbing Medal for plotting the genes fusarium fungus which can help destroy plant pathogens, so the use of pesticides was reduced. He was an agricultural scientist at the University of the Philippines (UP) in Los Baños.
