Pinoy Hilot at Angeles City: Another Guinness World Record

The city government of Angeles recently held the highest sitting back-rub massage chain in the world. The city expects for the Guinness World Record title with a total of 447 masseurs and masseuses who participated. All of them are members of the Philippine Association of Licensed Massage Therapists (PALMT). The said event is set to be verified by representatives from the Guinness Book of Records. Ronaldo Tiotuico, Department of Tourism 3 (DOT3) regional director, uttered his confidence that the new world record will be attained by the wellness industry since DoT is now on its way to catch the fitness fever as they top for the huge destination for treatment, healing, and recovery. At present, the holder for the longest standing human shoulder massage chain came from St. Louis, Missouri in USA.

 
Filipino Scholar Makes It to the Bravo ASEAN

In the annual event, Bravo ASEAN, music and dance contest in Korea, a Filipino scholar makes it to the top as he bagged the gold prize.

Jemuel Forto, Filipino scholar under a Korean government scholarship program, stands out from the 12 teams from 10 ASEAN countries as he sings a Korean ballad entitled "Miss You, Miss You, Miss You".

 
DOST and Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) develop a flagship venture with Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) which subsidize about P16, 758,514.73 for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) projects since 2003. The said project is a non-collateralized and interest free program. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo calls for more focused assistance programs for MSMEs. Arnold Inumpa, DOST's Benguet Provincial S&T Center Director, explained that as of February 2009, 46 SET-UP projects are expected for the Benguet region. He wants to pursue MSMEs in Benguet and also in CAR to benefit with the program so that they will be able to develop and grow their businesses.

 
Search for the Country's Top Science Educators

DOST (Department of Science and Technology) announces its 2nd Gawad Leadership and Innovations for Development Relevant to Science Education or Gawad LIDER.

The search is on for the country's top science educators to persuade more people to come out and nominate individuals and institutions who have contributed to the betterment of science education in the country.

On its second search, SEI Director Dr. Ester B. Ogena said the Gawad LIDER becomes more prestigious with higher prices at stake. P200, 000 cash prize is pegged and a medal for winners in the Exemplary Leadership and Innovation Award Categories.

 
Django Bustamante Top in the World Pool Ranking

After winning in the recent WPA World 9-Ball Championship in Doha, Qatar, Filipino billiard legend Francisco "Django" Bustamante is now ranked No. 1 in the world of pool according to the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA).

The billiard legend from Tarlac City, Philippines got the highest point, which is 1142 points. He is 170 points ahead over Karl Boyes of Great Britan (972 points), who ranked as the second place.

 
The Great ASEAN Scientists

The following are the scientists who received prominent award because they have used science to uplift their community:

Romulo Davide, an agricultural scientist was one of the recipients of 2012 Ramon Magsaysay Awards last August 31. Davide was recognized because his contribution in agricultural research. He had encouraged other farmers to use science in their farming activities.

With this start, Davide made empowerment possible through his Farmer-Scientists Training Programme. He established linkages with scientists who will help the farmers in the integration of science in crop production. With Davide’s projects, new technologies were developed to assist various farming needs.

 
Government Grants for Inventors

The support from the Lower House and Senate is needed by Davaoeños to increase the budget allotted to the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI), as the main government office that provides assistance to Filipino inventors. Virgilio Sangutan, Davao Inventors Association president, revealed that only some Filipino inventors can have the opportunity to develop their creations because of the lack of assistance from our government in terms of loan windows and tax exemptions. TAPI only gets P53-million annual budget, P25 million of it will go to the operating expenses, only 12% of P25 million is given out as loan assistance to qualified Filipino inventors.

 
Dangerous Frog Fungus Spreading Rapidly in Asia

Experts announced that a fatal fungus that has killed hundreds of different kinds of frogs in the US is now harming five different frog species in Asia, specifically in the Philippines.

US and Filipino scientists found out that Philippines is the third country in Asia to be affected by the chytrid fungus, which targets the skin of frogs and distresses the arrangement of tadpoles' body parts.
