Kapampangan Painter Does One Great Thing for the Country

Even without recognition, Daniel Dizon, a Kapampangan painter, does one remarkable thing for the country.

The Kapampangan painter had produced notable paintings that captured on canvas the design and colors of combat uniforms of Katipuneros, including American colonial troops.

 
DLSU All-Female Team Turned out to be an Award-Winning

All-female team of De La Salle University (DLSU) turned out in the recently concluded National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE) 2009.

The finalists received the "Sibol Award-Outstanding Student Creative Research" on the college level with their research "Greenstick Fracture Detection and Diagnosis Using Image Processing and Analysis."

The all-female team composed of Airi Bianca Beltran, Rachel Joyce Oaña and Cathlyn Marie Montano.

The DLSU team, a blend of computer geeks and computer science majors, said it was the time when they were just starting that challenged them the most. They developed a system that performs image processing and analysis to detect fractures, specifically Greenstick fractures. These fractures are one of the most common fractures in children and, if undiagnosed and untreated, can lead to deformity and permanent disability.

 
DOST and IPO to Assist Ilonggo Inventors

To help with technical assistance, funding for their inventions and registration and processing of their patents, Department of Science and Technology-Region 6 (DOST) and Intellectual Property Office (IPO) are urging Ilonggo inventors to register their work since many of them are waiting to be exposed.

 
Filipino Scientist Research and Development Capabilities

Dr. Alvin Culaba was the recent elected President of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP). In a meeting with members of the Congressional Commission on Science Technology and Engineering (COMSTE), he proposed that COMSTE and the NRCP must work in partnership to create projects that will be commercially feasible with the assistance of Research and Development (R&D) and our best scientists. The NRCP thru the Department of Science and Technology has the directive to give assistance to the expansion of the research capabilities of our Filipino scientists.

 
Traditional Farming: Shield to Beat Climate Change

As the issue of climate continues, the country was recently struck by two typhoons known as Ondoy and Pepeng. The two typhoons brought heavy rains in the country and even in other parts of the world.

It flooded large tracts of rice fields in Northern Philippines and destroyed crops ready for harvest. The typhoons in the region brought into sharp relief the issue of climate changes as farmers struggle to cope with changing weather patterns.

In the past, less rainfall can be expected during September and October, but now there are heavy rains and strong winds.

 
Filipino Inventors Expo and Trade Fair

To showcase the ingenuity of the Filipinos, the local government of Quezon City will held its 1st QC Filipino Inventors Expo and Trade Fair.

The said event, a project of the Mayor, Vice Mayor and the Filipino Inventors Society, while the event secretariat is the SBECO, will be at the Quezon City Hall Risen Garden on November 15-21, 2010.
