Young Filipino Scientists Push for Excellence

In the recently concluded, National Invention Competition '10, young inventors are pushed even more towards excellence to be globally competitive.

The said competition, which was participated by at least 67 inventors, was divided into five categories: Tuklas (Outstanding Invention; Outstanding Utility Model), Outstanding Industrial Design, Outstanding Creative Research and SIBOL (Outstanding Student Creative Research).

Young participants are prioritized in the contest since; they will be the future leaders of the nation.

 
The Invention of Ben Cruz

Benjamin Cruz is a well-known inventor from Bulacan. Last January 29, he sent a letter which indicates proposals regarding his inventions to the Presidential Action Center. One of his recent inventions is a kind of pill called Golden Heart. The pill will help a person reduce his cholesterol level and to prevent vascular obstruction, a disease that kills many people worldwide. It is also tested to prevent blocks in the arteries of the heart, gall stones, kidney stones, cerebral stroke, by-pass surgery, dialysis, erectile dysfunction and acne.

 
More Filipino Research Scientists and Engineers for RP's Disaster and Poverty Alleviation

Dr. Emerlinda Roman, president of the University of the Philippines System, an institution under the Engineering Research and Development for Technology (ERDT) of the Department of Science and Technology (DoST), said that the country is in need of more more research scientists and engineers (RSEs) with advanced degrees to make science and technology work for disaster mitigation and poverty alleviation, ensure a sustainable environment and reasonable energy for the future, and turn out indigenous technologies to enhanced Filipinos' lives.

 
APEC to Improve Science and Math Teacher Education

In the Asia Pacific Economic Conference (APEC) forum, educators from Australia, United States, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, and South Korea signed a manifesto that supports collaborative activities in research, linkages and exchanges and policy development aimed at enhancing science and mathematics teacher education in the region.

 
Tawi-Tawi Squidworm

Leaded by Dr. Filemon Romero, a scientist from this municipality and a consultant of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), said that a new species of "squidworm" (Teuthidodrilus samae) was found in the bentho-pelagic zone on the Tawi-Tawi side of the Celebes Sea in the waters of South Ubian municipality.

A team of foreign scientists from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, NOAA Ocean Exploration Program, the National Geographic Society, and NSF Centers of Ocean Science Education Excellence and University of California, Los Angeles led by Dr. Larry Madin also joined Romero's team during the ISSP.

 
Tawa-Tawa: An Antidote for Dengue and Tuberculosis?

Are you going to laugh at the wonders of this plant? Some of the Filipinos claimed that this plant called Euphorbia hirta or simply "tawa-tawa" has antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Some doctors would say that tawa-tawa can be beneficial to us because it can be an antidote for dengue and tuberculosis.

 
The First Seaweed Laboratory in Central Luzon

BFAR seaweed tissue culture laboratory is located at ABMATC Compound in Barangay Zabali, Baler, Aurora. This was known as the first seaweed laboratory in Central Luzon and one of the six active seaweed laboratories in the country. As a major project of Casiguran Mariculture Park, it covers an area of 321.6 hectares in Casiguran Bay. Aurora province is planning to develop its seaweed culture area from 150 hectares to 1,000 hectares in the next years.

 
Filipino Science Professor Selected for UNESCO Award

On March 4, 2010, a Filipino professor who discovered the use of snail toxins to study brain functions is one of the five exceptional women scientists in the world to be awarded by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The event will be held in Paris, France.

Science Education Institute reported that Lourdes Cruz, a professor at the Marine Science Institute at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City is one of the recipients of the 2010 L'Oreal-UNESCO Awards in the Life Sciences.
