Filipino Agricultural Scientist

Ramon Magsaysay Foundation (RMAF) had recognized Asian people who became true leaders in their own field. One of the awardees is Romulo Davide, also known as the "Father of Plant Nematology", a 78-year-old agricultural scientist. He was given recognition because of his unwavering passion in helping Filipino farmers. He had conducted broad research about fungi which lead to the development of biological products that struggle nematode infestations common in vegetables, rice, and fruits, among others.

 
Biotech Macapuno

Biotech crops produced its first biotech product macapuno. Without the biotech product, the country will not be known as the macapuno capital of the world. The University of the Philippines College of Agriculture (UPCA) in Los Baños, Laguna developed a propagation technique for the product since 1960, before biotechnology was viewed as a process for genetic modification.

 
Phil Red Cross Conducts Disaster Preparedness Training at Baseco, Tondo

As known to be a disaster-prone area due to its geographical location, the Philippine Red Cross recently conducted training on disaster preparedness for residents of Baseco (Bataan Shipyard Corporation Compound) in Tondo, Manila.

The practical drill was held last April 14 14 at the PRC stockyard on Bonifacio Drive, Port Area, Manila.

 
Filipino Scientists Exhibition

To develop the promotion of local researches that could bridge gaps in the industry, the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) of Eastern Visayas is pushing Filipino scientists and inventors to join the 2010 Visayas Island Convention Contest and Exhibits.

In this region, problems in the agriculture sector are the concerns. DOST wants local inventors to focus their studies to address the gaps presented.

 
DOST Conducts Seminar-Workshop on Climate Change

As DOST XI (Department of Science and Technology) observes the need to increase the awareness of teachers and school kids on the global environmental issue, thirty two teachers from national high schools in the region underwent a three day seminar-workshop on climate change

In partnership with the University of the Philippines Mindanao and the Philippine Association of Japanese Ministry of Education Scholars (PHILAJAMES) Mindanao Chapter, DOST conducts this kind of project after the clear evidences of climate change showed after the typhoon Ondoy and Pepeng.

 
DOST's 5 Priority Programs

In the Communication and News Exchange (CNEX) meeting, Mario Montejo, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary, discussed the agency's five priority programs which focused on making a difference in the lives of Filipinos by maximizing science and technology. Private media attended the event. Since, President Aquino's dream for our country is named daang matuwid.

 
Math and Science Software for Kids

DOST (Department of Science and Technology) led to make Math and Science be loved by school kids. The department was challenged how to make it more interesting and less feared by kids.

In 2006, DOST completed e the release of 101 elementary Science and Mathematics modules in CD copies. And recently, they launched in Philippine Science High School, Davao City Campus the courseware website, which expanded the project via World Wide Web.

 
Filipino Invention to be the Next Big Thing in Green Technology

Filipino inventor, Ismael Aviso of Navotas City, 54, is said to be the next big thing in green technology through his electric vehicle prototype.

Aviso started to be in the line after his appearance over the internet and on the pages in a website known as Pure Energy Systems Wiki (PESWiki).
