Filipino Discovers Treatment System for Bananas

Philippines is the 3rd largest banana exporting country in the world. About P35 billion was earned by banana industry and almost P400 million local taxes was contributed to the country.

Moko and Panama Diseases, these are fungous and contagious infections that could spread in banana plantations and also eventually damage the plants. Moko is an infectious disease which ripens the fruits too early. It also kills the infected plants in few weeks. Panama disease is a Fusarium oxyforumcubense fungus which destroyed the Malaysian banana 3 years ago.

 
DOST commends composting technology invention of a UP professor

An awarding ceremony happened at the Hyatt Hotel and Casino at Ermita, Manila last April 23. A professor and scientist at University of the Philippines-Los Banos had received an award from the Department of Science and Technology-National Academy of Science and Technology (DOST-NAST).

 
ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra

ABS-CBN and First Philippine Holdings Inc. had recently formed an addition to Kapamilya Network, Philharmonic Orchestra. One of the objectives of this network is to promote an advocacy for Filipinos to connect and experience real and good music and to provide music of the highest caliber to the general audience. It consists of 40-piece musical ensemble. Composer Ryan Cayabyab commended the formation of this group which will be introduced to the public  in a concert entitled Icons at the Arena at the SM Mall of Asia.

 
Filipino Agricultural Scientist

Ramon Magsaysay Foundation (RMAF) had recognized Asian people who became true leaders in their own field. One of the awardees is Romulo Davide, also known as the "Father of Plant Nematology", a 78-year-old agricultural scientist. He was given recognition because of his unwavering passion in helping Filipino farmers. He had conducted broad research about fungi which lead to the development of biological products that struggle nematode infestations common in vegetables, rice, and fruits, among others.

 
Outstanding Filipino Inventors
The Department of Science and Technology had celebrated the National Science and Technology Month last July. Part of their event is the awarding of four innovative scientists from the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) for sharing their expertise in thru research in various fields. In genetics, Christian Joseph Cumagun had received the Outstanding Research and Development Eduardo Quisumbing Medal for plotting the genes fusarium fungus which can help destroy plant pathogens, so the use of pesticides was reduced. He was an agricultural scientist at the University of the Philippines (UP) in Los Baños.
