As Dr. Teodoro Topacio, Jr. conferred to have the National Scientist Award by President Arroyo, the country’s premier institution in the field of animal healthcare and nutrition, Univet Nutrition & Animal Health-care Co. (UNAHCO), cited him for the said award.

Dr. Topacio was the first dean of the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Veterinary Medicine, who was conferred as a National Scientist Award by President Arroyo.

The said award is in acknowledgment of Topacio's exceptional accomplishment in veterinary medicine for more than 50 years.

The rank and title of National Scientist is the highest honor conferred to a man or woman of science by the government. It was created under Presidential Decree 1003-A to recognize the outstanding achievements of Filipino scientists.

Topacio received the said award for being notable in his achievements including studies on leptospirosis in the country, particularly the transmission of the disease from pigs to humans.

Univet cited him for helping the company in organizing a veterinary research and development division for the Unilab Inc., the country’s biggest pharmaceutical company. [via philstar.com]
