Engineers May Practice In Western And Asian Sectors

Our age is defined by modernization. We are living in a competitive world so there's a need of continuous research and study about scientific and technological breakthroughs.

The accreditation of engineering field is so meticulous. At present, they have to comply with 4 different accrediting associations in the world.

With this, engineers have a hard time in applying to international registers like the APEC Register and the International Professional Engineers' Register. Today, the two years short in our basic education is the problem so we are not qualified for membership in engineering bodies. Our engineers will not enter the Western and other Asian complement.

In 2 years time, the Congressional Commission on Science, Technology and Engineering (COMSTE) has been pushing the Philippines to become an accredited member of the Washington Accord. This is a contract between nations that knows the uniformity of engineering programs. This will permit our Filipino engineers to practice as professionals in other member countries. Although Filipino engineers proliferate in the construction and oil job in North America, Europe and the Middle East, the accreditation issue prevents them from attaining equal standing with other countries’ engineers. An agreement with the Philippine Technological Council (PTC) and the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) was signed last week to practise full membership to the Washington Accord. Taiwan, Korea, and Japan are some of the technologically advanced countries that are willing to help us achieve this objective by giving scholarships to qualified Filipino engineers for study and training in their countries.  Let us increase our efforts toward international recognition to raise the standards of engineering education here in our country so that we can produce top class engineers who will grow in the global stage.
