In first-ever Google Map Maker Global Competition, Pinoy software developer wins the $50,000 worth of donation funds over hundreds of contestants.

Wayne Dell Manuel, winner of the first-ever Google Map Maker Global Competition, is a 24-year-old developer at the National Telehealth Center of the University of the Philippines.

He vested over 700 contestants from countries around the world in the first-ever Google Map Maker Global Competition to win a $50,000 donation from UNICEF for projects that empower Filipino youth through technology in the Philippines and an all-expense paid trip to the Google Super Mappers 2010 conference in Switzerland.

In addition to this, he will also receive a VIP tour from UNICEF officials of the projects that will benefit from the $50,000 donation.

The said competition ran from December 15, 2009 to January 31, 2010. The contestants are required to map geographical areas in their homeland like universities, schools, hospitals and medical clinics currently not on Google Maps. The online map will help humanitarian organizations like UNICEF do their jobs better navigating around a country.

The maps made by Manuel in Google Map Maker are later placed in Google Maps and were used to facilitate rescue operations during calamities in the country. Tourists from other countries also used these maps as their guide to visit Philippines.

His contributions to the Philippines’ online map are very useful to everyone. Even though the contest period is over, Manuel said that he will continue to edit Google map Maker to provide accurate details for everyone. He is also encouraging all Filipinos to use Google Map Maker to share their knowledge about their hometowns with the world. [via asianjournal.com]
