A $5-million worth of Ethanol farm will be developed soon as part of government plans. It will be situated in a 100 hectare site in Aurora.

The project will use Korean technology of extracting ethanol from seaweeds. Senator Edgardo Angara, Chairman of Congressional Commission on Science and Engineering, and the DOST will establish partnership with South Korean government to enhance the country's seaweed industry. According to Angara, the project will be implemented in Isabela, Quirino, and Bohol. The municipality of Dilasag is being eyed by Angara to be the site of biofuel farm project. Two years ago, they had used the Korea's process of extracting ethanol form seaweed and it became cost-efficient to the project. Since seaweeds do not contain liguin, pre-treatment is not needed in the conversion of fuels. So seaweeds ethanol is inexpensive to produce than other biofuel. Our country is known as the top exporter and producer of processed seaweed worldwide. If we're going to compare wood bio fuel with seaweed ethanol, the latter can absorb up to 7 times more carbon n the atmosphere and it contributes a lot to climate change mitigation because ethanol offers excellent livelihood and agro-business investment opportunities. As a result, this project will uplift the economy of Dilasag and Aurora as a whole. Aside from ethanol, seaweed has other useful by-products like animal feed, fertilizer, soil, conditioner, and cosmetics. [via philstar.com]
