After three tries, World Robotics Olympiad (WRO) advisory committee has finally selected Philippines to host this year's World Robotics Olympiad and the 9th Philippine Robotics Olympiad (PRO).

The good news was revealed recently by Mylene Abiva and by the national adviser of Philippine Robotics Olympiad (PRO), which was held at the Quezon City Science Interactive Center.

According to Abiva, president and CEO of Felta Multimedia Inc, PRO can give Filipino students an opportunity to develop their perspective by the exploration of robots and robotic systems in schools while WRO can endorse the Philippines as an rising technology hub in the Asia-Pacific.

Three hundred public and private schools nationwide are expected to join PRO, which is slated on September 10. Grand awardees in this competition will represent the Philippine team in the World Robotics Olympiad, which is scheduled on November 6 at the SMX Convention Center, where more than 1,200 foreign students and coaches are expected to participate.

Participants will be using LEGO Robotics, which can be controlled using an NXT or RCX brick, a microcomputer that functions as the brain of Robolab inventions.

In addition, participants will use computers to design a program with command icons, which is transferred to the NXT/RCX brick via Bluetooth technology, where the robots are commanded to move in various ways through a designated field of challenges.

These kinds of competitions could be the best way in honing the youth to be the future scientists, engineers and inventors, by developing their creativity and problem-solving skills. [via philstar.com]
