The support from the Lower House and Senate is needed by Davaoeños to increase the budget allotted to the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI), as the main government office that provides assistance to Filipino inventors. Virgilio Sangutan, Davao Inventors Association president, revealed that only some Filipino inventors can have the opportunity to develop their creations because of the lack of assistance from our government in terms of loan windows and tax exemptions. TAPI only gets P53-million annual budget, P25 million of it will go to the operating expenses, only 12% of P25 million is given out as loan assistance to qualified Filipino inventors.

There are 100 inventors in Mindanao, but only one was granted loan assistance last year. To be able to qualify, the candidate for financial assistance must undergo a strict process which requires money and time. There is no TAPI sub office in Davao, so an inventor must go to Manila to process needed requirements. Edgar Garcia, TAPI Director, a satellite office in Davao will not be possible because it will require additional budget from the mere budget of the office. [via mb.com.ph]
