In year 2006, more than a thousand people were buried after a massive landslide in the barangay of Guinsaugon. In the same year, a mudslide caused by heavy rains also killed hundreds of residents in the Bicol region. Continuous rains triggering floods and landslides in 9 regions have killed 47 people and displaced more than 1.3 million people. With the increasing number of deaths, President Benigno Aquino III had ordered the drafting of an executive order that would impose a total log ban in at least 6 provinces. To avoid these problems, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is currently installing landslide sensors in risk areas in the country, this is in preparation for possible calamities during typhoon season.

According to DOST Undersecretary Graciano Yumul, acting chief of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the government had preferred 2 villages in Saint Bernard, Southern Leyte as pilot areas for the landslide sensors.

DOST Secretary Mario Montejo is scheduled to fly to Saint Bernard on Saturday to lead the setting up of the new gadget. The subsurface detector will serve as an early warning device for landslides was developed by the students and faculty of University of the Philippines. Automatic weather stations devices will also be installed in Saint Bernard. The next step of DOST is to install 8 more landslide sensors in selected landslide-prone areas in 4 provinces. If the installation program will benefit the Filipinos, DOST will continue to install more sensors in all identified landslide-prone areas in the country. The deployment of sensors is expected t finish before the typhoon season in the country starts in June. PAGASA stated that majority of the typhoons in 2011 would be stronger compared to those of previous years since La Niña phenomenon is existing. [via abs-cbnnews.com]
