To improve the quality of furniture and handicrafts industries, scientists at the Forest Products Research and Development Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FPRDI-DOST) have developed a cellular phone-sized digital moisture meter.

The scientists are leaded by Dr. Marina Alipon, with other team members, Gil Dolotina and Grecelda Eusebio and researchers Gerwin Guba and Alvin Retamar.

This moisture meter, which won the 2010 National Invention Award in the Outstanding Utility Model Category, could be of great help for workers and owners of furniture business to identify the moisture content of wood that is an important element in manufacturing high-value furniture and handicrafts.

The said device, which is more affordable with a price of P5,000 each, is now being used by more than 100 handicraft and furniture workers in the country.

According to Felix Tamolang, FPRDI Deputy Director, moisture meters are used to measure the percentage of water in wood and determine if the material is ready for use.

Compare to the traditional way of measuring the moisture content of woods, which took time to identify the reading, this can be read right away.

Using this device, furniture and handicrafts industries can now produce quality wooden furniture, builders’ woodworks and handicrafts. [via mb.com.ph]
