Phil Red Cross Conducts Disaster Preparedness Training at Baseco, Tondo

As known to be a disaster-prone area due to its geographical location, the Philippine Red Cross recently conducted training on disaster preparedness for residents of Baseco (Bataan Shipyard Corporation Compound) in Tondo, Manila.

The practical drill was held last April 14 14 at the PRC stockyard on Bonifacio Drive, Port Area, Manila.

Demonstrators of skills, who were earlier trained by the Philippine Red Cross on disaster management, were also from the Baseco Community and they were guided by Red Cross Emergency Response Unit (ERU)

The drill is made as part of the Red Cross intensified disaster preparedness, risk reduction, and response program in the wake of emerging disasters that put lives on high risk, especially in thickly populated urban areas.

Volunteers from the 143 Red Cross project served as the participants. The 143 Red Cross manages and trains 44 volunteers in every community, wherein 1 will serve as the leader and the 43 as members.

The training focused in rescue capability or skills such as high angle rescue, ambulance response, mass casualty incident management, and collapsed structure extrication.

With this training, Baseco and other communities are expected to empower to make its capacity and become independent in times of emergency.

At present, Baseco has 200 registered members of 143 Red Cross, equipped with survival whistle, first aid kits, and emergency information cards to be used in the spreading of information on disaster preparedness in the community. [via pia.gov.ph]
