In the Communication and News Exchange (CNEX) meeting, Mario Montejo, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary, discussed the agency's five priority programs which focused on making a difference in the lives of Filipinos by maximizing science and technology. Private media attended the event. Since, President Aquino's dream for our country is named daang matuwid. The forum corresponds to their directive which sets technological effort a way to present economic and social benefits to the people. The five priority programs are;

  1. use science and technology to solve pressing national problems.
  2. develop appropriate technologies to create growth in the countryside.
  3. improve industry competitiveness.
  4. use science and technology to enhance government and social services.
  5. build the country's capacity in emerging technologies.

Sec. Montejo stated that cost-effective solution to problems is the agency's hymn in building technology appropriate to the needs of Filipinos. Social problems such as health, nutrition and environment, education, and disaster risk and mitigation measures and climate change were tackled during the forum. Affordable technological solutions were given to problems like health, nutrition, and environment, persisting problems on dengue, malnutrition, rice shortage, lack of potable water, and coral reef rehabilitation. Alliance with other government agencies like Department of Health (DOH), Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), Local Government Units (LGUs) is made to enhance the capacity to distribute and reproduce the technology. Filipino scientists had developed landslide sensors which earned international recognition. The sensors can discover disturbances to notify residents of a landslide. Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Herminio Coloma reminded the occurrence of Typhoon Juan last year where the DOST was able to publicize warnings leading to less casualties. Coloma commended the efforts undertaken by DOST to make technology serve the needs of Filipinos. [via pia.gov.ph]
