Last May 17-19, the Region 7 office of the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) through its provincial office sponsored three-day training on mango processing and packaging the Mango Processing House here. The goal of the training is to help and assist mango growers of Siquijor.

The said training had helped 25 mango growers and facilitators in the province in producing quality processed mangoes that can race with other processed products in the market.

According to DoST7 Siquijor provincial director Mario E. de la Pena, the training will build up a sustainable supply of processed mango and will progress the function of the project to boost farmers’ profits and create more employment.  "This training activity could better Siquijor’s chances in maximizing its abundant mango supply," he added. Further, Dela Peña stated that various traders are benefited of the large quantity of mangoes supply because they are selling low grade in nearby cities and towns.

In Siquijor, 9,070 hectares total land area is committed to mango production. Most mangoes are planted in spotted areas while few are in semi-commercial scale or compact area.

At present, the provincial and municipal agriculturists monitor the financial and technical aspects of the project upon implementation. [via mb.com.ph]
