Water hyacinths, a plant of the lily family, are known as the one of the main causes of flood in Cotobato City. It clogs some waterways in and around the city since it grows and spreads so quickly in warmer climates such as the Philippines.

But this time, these water hyacinths will be known not as a cause of destruction but a source of income of some families in the community.

According to Dr. Zenaida Laidan, regional director of the Region 12 office of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST 12), a literature from the International Development Research Center (IDRC) said water hyacinths have been used as raw material for agricultural fertilizers, animal feeds, biogas, paper, board, and even construction materials.

The plant can also be used in controlling water pollution because it is capable of quickly absorbing heavy metals in water.

Laidan explained that the plant can be made into bags, slippers, mats, rope, paper and even fertilizer, which can be sold locally and globally.

DOST is now planning to provide trainings and livelihood support to individuals and groups who would like to undertake into water hyacinth-based livelihood project.

This will probably help solve the flood problems in the city and will definitely give extra income to some families. [via pia.gov.ph]
