With an objective to help his kababayans, Josefino Comiso, a Filipino-American scientist at the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration and a native of Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, shared some expertise about climate change last June 17 at the Albay Astrodome.

Comiso studied physics at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, and pursued his master's in Physics at the Florida State University and his doctorate at the University of California at Los Angeles.

On his lecture, he presented his research on the changes in temperature in the Arctic. He said that the Earth's temperature increased by about 1 degree Centigrade during the last century.

According to him, as a result of warming up of the sea temperature, it resulted to a chain of events like typhoons caused by the warming up of the ocean. With this, he said that Filipinos should hold ways to lessen the effect of natural disasters, since the Philippines is prone to them.

He added that the country should develop more geothermal, hydro, wind and solar energy as alternative for fossil fuels that give off greenhouse gases and contribute to global warming.

As Florencio P. Narito said, Educate people to conserve energy and that would be the biggest step towards preventing Climate Change. [via manilastandardtoday.com]
