Inventors from the Northern Part of the Philippines won DOST's event

During the 2011 Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits held in Pangasinan organized by the Department of Science and Technology, Ilocano inventors won in a prestigious regional invention contest. Engr Jose Zafaralia of Mariano Marcos State University in Batac City got the ‘Engineered Kawayan Technology: Machines and Products-Bamboo splitting machine.’ Also, Engr. Reynold Caoili and Dr. Reynaldo Castro of the Philippine Rice Research Institute-Batac City won the 1st prize in their creative research category for ‘Using water to pump water: the hydro-powered water pump.'

They competed following the theme: "Imbensyon at Inobasyon: Kabalikat sa Pagunlad." Other winners are: ‘Portable vacuum eraser' from the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University-La Union for the student artistic research Sibol category, College division; and ‘Microbial production of polyhydroxy alkanotes using fish scales as nitrogen source from the Philippine Science High School-Ilocos Sur under the Sibol category - High school division.

According to DOST Provincial Director Engr. Fehlander Madriaga, the goal of this event is to build up the talent and initiative of our Filipino investors. This will prove that the local products can compete with imported ones because of its better quality. Also, fascinated manufacturers or the investors themselves can mass-produce those local inventions that work. The inventions will participate in the National Inventions contest maybe next month or early next year. [via pia.gov.ph]
