The city government of Angeles recently held the highest sitting back-rub massage chain in the world. The city expects for the Guinness World Record title with a total of 447 masseurs and masseuses who participated. All of them are members of the Philippine Association of Licensed Massage Therapists (PALMT). The said event is set to be verified by representatives from the Guinness Book of Records. Ronaldo Tiotuico, Department of Tourism 3 (DOT3) regional director, uttered his confidence that the new world record will be attained by the wellness industry since DoT is now on its way to catch the fitness fever as they top for the huge destination for treatment, healing, and recovery. At present, the holder for the longest standing human shoulder massage chain came from St. Louis, Missouri in USA.

There were 710 students who participated at the Washington University to break the record made by the United Kingdom last Aug. 30, 2009 when 430 people gave their clients a shoulder massage during the Leeds Festival. Tiotuico revealed that in Pampanga, more than 100 day spas and resort destinations were visited by foreign and local visitors to avail some services such as facial massage and anti-aging treatment.

I contemplated on making it to the world record, this time in sitting position, in order to show to the world that the Philippines is able of drum-beating its niche as the health and wellness capitol of the world, said PALMT president Jevren Sibug.

Sibug also added that Filipinos should be proud to proclaim to the world that Filipinos initiated the so-called "Pinoy Hilot". This is the traditional way of health and wellness as the best treatment for the aching body. He also clarified that the former holders of the Guinness records on back massage chains did not prove that the participants were legitimate therapists. Government agencies supported the massage event: Angeles City Tourism Office (ACTO), Department of Health (DoH), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Committee of Examiner of Massage Therapy, Continuing Massage Therapy Education Council, DoH's accredited training institutions for Massage Therapy of the Philippines and the Municipality of Lubao.
