The Department of Health reported that cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the Philippines. Currently, there are projects that are being funded by Department of Science and Technology. One of which is the one that makes use of immunoliposome method. It is now being developed for cancer patients. This is a type of treatment with fewer side effects and less pain. According to the development team leader, Dr. Jay Lazaro of the Institute of Biology, University of the Philippines-Diliman, the immunoliposomes will act as carriers of drugs in cancer therapy. The team have tested on mice.

This kind of breakthrough technology is part of DOST’s drug discovery program for 2012, explained by DOST Secretary Mario Montejo. It lists high in the priorities under the Department's antibody molecular oncology R&D in our search for anti-cancer treatments suitable to Filipinos.

Nowadays, the common treatment for cancer is Chemotherapy which damages normal cells. Patients experience nasty side effects like nausea, vomiting, allergic reactions, fatigue, weight loss, changes in taste and smell, loss of appetite and hair loss. Immunoliposome method will only target cancer cells. With the aid of this method, it will coat cancer-treating drugs with liposomes, or microscopic artificial sacs which can be filled with drugs.  Immunoliposome treatment is more expensive but it is more effective because it only targets specific cells  which results in less toxicity. This will help the patient to recover against the disease.

Dr. Lazaro stated that another technology is being tested by the team. It is called Caelyx, a cancer drug. This kind of technology can be used with any other drug and any other illness. Caelyx may cost from P40,000 to 45,000 for every 20 mg. [via ph.news.yahoo.com]
