Church bells returned to National Museum

Two church bells considered as a Philippine-American war artifact were turned over today to the National Museum.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario turned over to Director Jeremy Burns of the National Muesum the two church bells reportedly taken from Meycauyan Church in Bulacan in 1899.

According to DFA, the bells were handed by Sisters of Mercy Midwest Community USA president Sister Judith Frikker to Philippine Consul General to Chicago Leo M. Herrera-Lim. The wooden part of the bells contains the message "Taken from the Church at MEYCAUAYAN, Luzon Islands after bombardment by Utah Battery March 29, 1899. By P.O. Thomas, Co. A Batallion of Engineers."  The bells’ height is 10 inches and its width is 3.5 inches.  It is quite heavy in 5 lbs.

Formerly, the bells were in the custody of a family then it were turned over to the Sisters of Mercy convent in Red Bluff, California. Last July 2011, the bells were found by a geologist named Monte Kniffen of the Sisters of Mercy in Omaha, Nebraska. [via pia.gov.ph]
