Outstanding Filipino Inventors

The Department of Science and Technology had celebrated the National Science and Technology Month last July. Part of their event is the awarding of four innovative scientists from the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) for sharing their expertise in thru research in various fields. Among them are:
In genetics, Christian Joseph Cumagun had received the Outstanding Research and Development Eduardo Quisumbing Medal for plotting the genes fusarium fungus which can help destroy plant pathogens, so the use of pesticides was reduced. He was an agricultural scientist at the University of the Philippines (UP) in Los Baños.

In  DNA analysis,  Ma. Corazon de Ungria had awarded as the Outstanding Research and Development Julian Banzon Medal for her determined efforts in leading forensic DNA investigation. She was a microbiologist and head of the DNA Analysis Laboratory in UP Diliman. Her study deals with the corpse of humans. This will benefit the family and relatives of fire victims, sexual assault and child abuse cases and other criminal investigations. De Ungria also received the Gawad Chancellor UP Hall of Fame for Research.  She had inspired and assisted a student who wrote about CSI (Crime Scene Investigation).

In Natural cancer cure, Rolando dela Cruz received the Outstanding Technology Commercialization Gregorio Zara Medal for his numerous herbal antiviral products. He is once a barber and he witnessed how his clients suffered from different skin diseases like warts, moles and fungal infections. From the extracts of cashew nut and other herbs, Dela Cruz brought the healing creams,called DeMole and DeWart. In a report, 14 patients with skin cancer were cured in 16 weeks using his healing creams.

In Newborn screening, Dr. Carmencita Padilla, a professor at the Department of Pediatrics at the UP College of Medicine, had received the Dioscoro Umali Medal for her remarkable leadership in human genome institutions and research teams. Her research paved way to detect and treat inborn metabolic disorders. Her legacy lies in the newborn screening traced with DOH and as a law in 2004. [via newsinfo.inquirer.net]
