The Great ASEAN Scientists

The following are the scientists who received prominent award because they have used science to uplift their community:

Romulo Davide, an agricultural scientist was one of the recipients of 2012 Ramon Magsaysay Awards last August 31. Davide was recognized because his contribution in agricultural research. He had encouraged other farmers to use science in their farming activities.

With this start, Davide made empowerment possible through his Farmer-Scientists Training Programme. He established linkages with scientists who will help the farmers in the integration of science in crop production. With Davide’s projects, new technologies were developed to assist various farming needs.

Other scientists also won the prestigious award in the past years. M. S. Swaminathan, a geneticist, became famous when he produced high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice. He is called the "Father of the Green Revolution in India". Angel C. Alcala is another Filipino scientist who won the award in 1992 for rehabilitating coral reefs in the Philippines. He had advocated for the conservation of sea waters and for the preservation of Philippines' first artificial reef. Raden Kodijat, a calm and dedicated medical doctor of Indonesia who became well known because of leading the cure for yaws disease, a weakening infectious taint that affected Indonesia from 1930s to the 1950s.

Another awardee is Krisana Kraisintu, a pharmaceutical consultant who propagated the increase of access to life-saving medicines in Africa that will cure HIV and AIDS.

Cynthia Maung was awarded for community leadership in 2002 and became famous in Time magazine's Asian heroes issue in 2003. He treated refugees, migrants and orphans. [via nst.com.my]
