Learn LiDAR, a technology that makes use of laser pulses that generate 3D data.

Peter John Rodrigo, a Filipino laser scientist, is the recipient of prominent 2012 DOPS Prize for his work on wind LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) and optical trapping. He is a researcher for the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) Fotonik Optical Sensor Technology group. His wind LiDAR can measure the wind direction and velocity remotely. DTU Fotonik supported the commercialization of Rodrigo’s invention. Since the device is using inexpensive semiconductor lasers, the company recently patented LiDAR.

The Danish Optical Society (DOPS) website is currently promoting the extraordinary skills young researchers in the optical field. During the Northern Optics conference last Nov. 19-20, DOPS awarded Rodrigo with diploma and cash prize. It was Nathaniel Hermosa, also a Filipino scientist who wrote a blog about Rodrigo. It was uploaded at GMA News Online and the rest is history.

Rodrigo finished his Bachelor's and Master's degree at the National Institute of Physics, University of the Philippines Diliman. He earned his doctorate degree from Niels Bohr Institute of the University of Copenhagen. Rodrigo admired Dennis Gabor, a scientist and inventor of the Holographic technique.
