By winning top honors in the recent inventors' competitions held here and abroad, President Arroyo received in Malacañang three top Filipino inventors who brought prestige and glory to the country. During the inventor's call, Estrella Alabastro, Science and Technology secretary said that the trio is well-known for their contributions in medicine, construction and telecommunications. The president received them and congratulated them on their respective awards and they told her a little bit about what their inventions were. |

After the electric jeepney, here comes the 1st Filipino engineered and assembled electric tricycle (E-trike). It was designed and modified from a regular motorcycle with the sidecar of a regular tricycle by Antonio Aguilar, a former overseas Filipino worker and his son Allan, a municipal councilor of Marilao, Bulacan. E-trike is powered by four 12 volts rechargeable batteries that can last for 8 hrs. and can run for 80 to 100 kms. Charging of batteries can be done on slower pace or 6-8 hrs. and the faster pace is 1-2 hrs. |

To boost the country's scientific research and development or R&D, the government features some of the best inventions of Filipino inventors in the country. With a theme, Making Inventions Work for You, last November 17-21 in the National Inventor's Week, hundreds of the country's brightest minds in one place exhibit their works. Dr. George Colorado, division manager of DOST’s Invention Development Division, the said exhibit serves as an opportunity for inventors to promote their work. |

Senior program officer of the International Service for the Acquisition of AgriBiotech Applications (ISAAA), Dr. Rhodora Aldemita said that biotechnology is a most feasible alternative system to boost yields of crops that have been genetically enhanced to provide consumers with adequate nutrients. Aldemita said that agricultural biotechnology has succeeded in increasing yields while reducing dependence on chemical-based fertilizers, pesticides, nematicides and herbicides. Papaya ring spot virus (PRSV)-resistant papaya and Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) corn are just two of the successful genetically modified crops. |

After winning of the six students from Philippine Science High School (PSHS), in the Science Olympiad in South Korea last month, it is said that this may be the first step of the country for Philippine’s first Nobel Prize. The six students won six medals at a prestigious Science Tournament in South Korea, proving that Filipinos can go toe-to-toe with the best in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The senior and juniors from the state-run PSHS brought home three silver and three bronze medals from the 5th International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) in Changwon City on December 6-15. |
