Wine Industry in Kalinga

To upgrade the fruit wine processing in the province of Kalinga, DOST (Department of Science and Technology) grants P200,000 financial assistance for the proposal of Nancy Busacay of Dagupan West.

Alfonso Berto, DOST Provincial Officer, said that the P200,000 financial assistance will be utilized in packaging, design and labeling of the product including the provision of a fermentation kit to improve the quality of fruit wine extracted from Bugnay fruit tree.

 
Ethanol: The Gift from Seaweeds

A $5-million worth of Ethanol farm will be developed soon as part of government plans. It will be situated in a 100 hectare site in Aurora.

The project will use Korean technology of extracting ethanol from seaweeds.

 
Superkalan Inventor Patents

A Filipino inventor, from Bangar, La Union, is now considered as most awarded for the countless commendations he has received for his inventions.

Narciso Mosuela, 76, has received citations from different categories such as for excellence, entrepreneurship and invention. Filipino Inventor Society Inc.’s national award in 1984, top seller in the Ramot ti Aminanan (Root from the North) Exposition in 2003, the Department of Trade and Industry’s Outstanding MSME (micro, small and medium enterprise) in 2008, and Globe’s top Masigasig Award in 2008 are only some of the awards he has received for his many years of innovating things that could help his people.

But from the many awards he has, he is best known for his invention, superkalan. Superkalan is a stove made of concrete and flattened aluminum using wood instead of petroleum. It has been a fixture in many Filipino homes during the past 20 years.

 
Philippine Science East Visayas Students Reap International Awards

In this year's Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in San Jose, California, USA on May 9 to 14, four students from the Philippine Science High School-Eastern Visayas located at Government Center, Palo, Leyte have reaped international awards for the Philippines.

Three of the students are Jean Reni Briones de Guzman, Marc Abegonia Mapalo, and Maria Clara Isabel Sia of the Philippine Science High School-Eastern Visayas campus. The team won in the Team Awards category in the area of Life Sciences for their group study: Use of Natural Flocculants in Mitigating Harmful Algal Blooms (Red Tides), creating a natural treatment for Red Tide using indigenous materials.
