DOST Conducts Seminar-Workshop on Climate Change

As DOST XI (Department of Science and Technology) observes the need to increase the awareness of teachers and school kids on the global environmental issue, thirty two teachers from national high schools in the region underwent a three day seminar-workshop on climate change

In partnership with the University of the Philippines Mindanao and the Philippine Association of Japanese Ministry of Education Scholars (PHILAJAMES) Mindanao Chapter, DOST conducts this kind of project after the clear evidences of climate change showed after the typhoon Ondoy and Pepeng.

 
Filipino Science Professor Selected for UNESCO Award

On March 4, 2010, a Filipino professor who discovered the use of snail toxins to study brain functions is one of the five exceptional women scientists in the world to be awarded by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The event will be held in Paris, France.

Science Education Institute reported that Lourdes Cruz, a professor at the Marine Science Institute at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City is one of the recipients of the 2010 L'Oreal-UNESCO Awards in the Life Sciences.

Search for the Country's Top Science Educators

DOST (Department of Science and Technology) announces its 2nd Gawad Leadership and Innovations for Development Relevant to Science Education or Gawad LIDER.

The search is on for the country's top science educators to persuade more people to come out and nominate individuals and institutions who have contributed to the betterment of science education in the country.

On its second search, SEI Director Dr. Ester B. Ogena said the Gawad LIDER becomes more prestigious with higher prices at stake. P200, 000 cash prize is pegged and a medal for winners in the Exemplary Leadership and Innovation Award Categories.

 
Education: Alternative to Gang Membership

In the Philippines, Preda Foundation, a local human rights charity, said that teenage membership in urban gang has surged to an estimated 130,000 in the past 10 years.

Gang members are groomed in the slums as early as 9 years old. And according to soma researches made gang members at such early age are all victims of poverty.

Efren Peñaflorida, 28, also was bullied by gangs in high school. He is one of those who became a gang member when he was young. Now, Peñaflorida’s life has changed.
