Jaycee and Insular Life Award the 2009 Outstanding Filipinos

JCI Senate Philippines and The Insular Life Assurance Co., Ltd. recently award their winners for the 2009 Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) awards.

Given below are the names of the awardees in their respective field:

Teotimo M. Aganon, Ph.D. for Science and Technology - distinguished himself a scientist, research and development administrator, socio-civic leader, and educator. He contributed greatly to the growth of pest management technology, particularly in rodent control and locust containment in central Luzon.

 
Filipino-made Bio-organic Plant

A bio-organic fertilizer, called Seed Growth, was developed by renowned inventor Engr. Glenn T. Castillo by using nanotechnology which deals with the development of materials or devices within the size of 100 nanometers or smaller in at least one dimension.

This bio-organic plant supplement is made from fruit extracts and beneficial microorganisms can increase crop yields by as much as 30 percent while reducing the use of chemical fertilizer by 50 percent in the initial cropping.

 
Federico's Island Wine

With the 2009 Tropical Fruit Wine Competition, Federico Island Wine of Region 6 prevails as the Best Bignay Wine.

The 2009 Tropical Fruit Wine Competition, National Level held recently at SM City, Sta. Rosa, Laguna during the Department of Science and Technology South Luzon Cluster Science and Technology Fair.

Federico's Island Wine received a P10, 000 and the plaque of recognition from DOST, which is awarded by Regional director Alaxander Madrigal.

 
DLSU All-Female Team Turned out to be an Award-Winning

All-female team of De La Salle University (DLSU) turned out in the recently concluded National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE) 2009.

The finalists received the "Sibol Award-Outstanding Student Creative Research" on the college level with their research "Greenstick Fracture Detection and Diagnosis Using Image Processing and Analysis."

The all-female team composed of Airi Bianca Beltran, Rachel Joyce Oaña and Cathlyn Marie Montano.

The DLSU team, a blend of computer geeks and computer science majors, said it was the time when they were just starting that challenged them the most. They developed a system that performs image processing and analysis to detect fractures, specifically Greenstick fractures. These fractures are one of the most common fractures in children and, if undiagnosed and untreated, can lead to deformity and permanent disability.

 
APEC to Improve Science and Math Teacher Education

In the Asia Pacific Economic Conference (APEC) forum, educators from Australia, United States, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, and South Korea signed a manifesto that supports collaborative activities in research, linkages and exchanges and policy development aimed at enhancing science and mathematics teacher education in the region.
